How to be a confident entrepreneur – Blog

AB

Business requires you to be confident.

It has been proven that the most successful business people on the planet have high levels of certainty and confidence. It’s not something they’re born with. No-one in fact is born with it, it’s something that is built over time. So how can you create confidence?

If I told you that tomorrow you are going to wake up at 6am and run a marathon. Some of you reading this might say; “let’s rock and roll!” Whereas the rest of you might have a look of horror on your face because you’re prepared. Mentally as well as physically. You simply haven’t trained and built the muscle.

Yet, if I said to you; “Tomorrow morning at 6am, I want you to run one kilometer,” then I’d bet you’d probably be willing to at least give it a try. Week by week you’d add on more kilometers, getting stonger and better as you go. The pattern of doing and getting better would build your confidence and over time lead you to be ready to run that marathon.

The key here is the doing and getting better as you go. Don’t expect perfection straight away. You see, to be confident is to be competent. Meaning, the more competent you are, the more confidence you’ll have.

Advise to my younger self – Blog

What do you do when business hasn’t been going well for some time? You’ve been hustling and grinding, but nothing seems to be getting you the results you want.. Do you close up shop or keep going? What’s missing?

Let me remind you that the reason you are where you are is because of what you know. The reason why you are not where you want to be is because of something you don’t know. You see everyone, including myself, has blind spots. And at the end of the day it’s not the bullet you see coming that will hurt you, it’s the bullet you don’t see that will kill you.

If I could go back in time and give my younger self a piece of advice it wouldn’t be to work harder or to figure it all out. It would be to find a mentor or a coach.

It doesn’t matter what kind. Be it a health coach, a relationship coach or a business coach. Understand that there is no need to reinvent the wheel. That’s a painful process. Find someone who’s walked the path and got the grey hairs. They will see the things that you don’t see and this will shorten the proces you are going through.

How to be WEALTHY

AB

If you’re reading this, you’re most probably one of those people who want to live a high class lifestyle. Awesome, I applaud you. It takes courage, time and effort to upgrade your current lifestyle.

My name is Arnon Barnes, Serial Entrepreneur and International Business Mentor. I consider myself to be quite successful. However, my life didn’t always look like this. My journey has taken me from cleaning office buildings to being financially independent by the age of 28. In this article I am going to share with you my main keys for upscaling your life and becoming wealthy.

Define

First off, what does being wealthy even mean? Depending on where you live and what your path has looked like up till now, your definition of wealth is going to look different from the person next to you. It might resemble a certain sum of money in your bank account. Or a monthly amount of income. It might resemble something materialistic like a type of house, car or plane. It may be the amount of free time you have or all of the above. Whatever it may be, and there is no right or wrong answer, you need to define what wealth means to you because this definition is what is going to pull you forward when times are tough.

Start a business

Did you know that most wealthy people own businesses? An employee works an X amount of hours in exchange for a salary. There is nothing wrong with this, but unless you are promoted or work more hours your salary has a maximum to it. Eventually you will hit a ceiling. You can only be promoted so many times and you can only work so many hours per day. Owning a business makes it so there is no ceiling. You can leverage off the amount of products, services and prices. And by scaling you are able to increase revenues and even profits. Little side note. Scale smartly so this doesn’t mean you start to work more hours and again exchange your time for money. Don’t work harder, work smarter. You want to have the business do the work for you.

Manage your money

The most wealthy people on planet earth are excellent money managers. I’m not talking about the celebrities showing off their mansions on MTV Cribs. Studies have shown that the people who fall in these categories are high accumulators. What does that mean? High accumulators are people whose expenses increase as their income increases. They buy houses with high mortgages, lease expensive cars and planes when times are good. However, everything in life has ups and downs. Just look at the weather, human health and the economy. When times are down, high accumulators are stuck with extremely high monthly costs.

Resulting in many of them to file for bankruptcy. What you ultimately want to be doing is accumulate high amounts of money and manage your overall costs and spending wisely. Keep it to a minimum. As the saying goes; “manage what you have, else the universe won’t give you anymore.”

Be patient

Nothing great ever happened in the blink of an eye. Of course there are some exceptions, there always will be, but this isn’t the norm. Becoming wealthy takes planning, execution, readjusting, perseverance and time. Go for the slow burn instead of the blowtorch. From my experience this route is more sustainable. You want your wealth to last you a long time, don’t you?

The name of the game is ACTION

AB

Hi there entrepreneur!

Are you longing to work a little less after years of being operational in your business? Spend more time with your family, do some traveling or finally take on that hobby? As a business owner myself I completely understand. Entrepreneurship is extremely rewarding, but it can also take its toll. Having worked with many entrepreneurs and business owners from all over the world, I see the need to sometimes be able to take a step back after years of working overtime is very normal and even at times a must. In every phase of life we have different priorities. Don’t feel guilty for wanting more free time. You’re still a dedicated and loyal entrepreneur, you’re just prioritizing things a little differently now and that’s okay. Keep reading because in this article I’m going to share my 5 steps for scaling a business and creating more time in your agenda.

Reengineer –

Start with the end goal in mind. Where do you ideally want to be as an entrepreneur and where do you want your business to be? Write it down in a juicy one pager. Then write down where you and the business are currently at? And lastly, what’s missing? Because businesses have many layers it’s never just one thing. That’s why it’s so important to practically list things. Keep your end goal in mind and reengineer the process. This is fun to do. I’d recommend to get your team involved. Make it a team effort because ultimately more brains are better than one.

Foundation –

From my experience many entrepreneurs start off by building their business with so much enthusiasm and take massive action, but end up building a house of cards. When building anything on a weak foundation, eventually it will come crashing down. So before you make any adjustments in your business you need to go back to the drawing board and make an inventory of its foundation. Can the current foundation sustain the end goal? If yes, great! If not, what’s missing? Be honest because you can’t strengthen or fix something you’re not aware of. Then prioritize and start taking action.

Action –

After you and your team have established what needs to be tackled, make it a habit to take action on these things, not more than 2 actions per day. This is critical. It’s been proven that people often experience the feeling of overwhelm when they create change. Don’t over complicate the process. Keep it simple, for your benefit and yours teams benefit.

System  –

Merely knowing which action to take won’t get you results. There needs to be a plan or system behind it. Otherwise it’s just a nice idea. Some people work with apps, others with calendars or simple to do lists. In any case, the system is there to create structure. If you wake up one day completely overwhelmed all you need to do is look at the system and it will tell you exactly what you need to do. The less you need to think about what you need to do the better.

Consistency –

If I asked you to get up and run 42km right now, you’d probable think I was crazy. You probably wouldn’t get very far because you aren’t mentally and physically fit. But if I were to ask you to run 1km tomorrow morning, you’d probably be fine with that. And the day after that 2km and the day after that 3km etc…. In time you would be ready to run your marathon. Therefore, taking your actions for only one week is not going to give you results. I believe that if you can cultivate patience and consistency as a hard skill, you’ve already won because most business owners don’t have this nailed down.

Remember, you only have so much energy you can bring to the table in a day and thus can only create a certain amount of change. The more things you focus on, the more you dilute your power. By diluting your power you are prolonging your process to winning more free time. Be smart about how you spend your energy. Follow the system, be consistent and you will achieve your audacious goal, even if it takes some time.

Talent alone won’t get you the job

What’s going to get you that job?

The articles I write are often directed at business leaders, but I wanted to direct this article to the people who are applying for jobs in medium sized businesses from a business owners perspective.

You see, one way to grow a company is by hiring team members. Therefore, some years ago that is exactly what I did. I’m going to be bold and speak on behalf of my fellow business owners. You, as an employee might not be aware of this, but us business owners would never be able to get so far if it weren’t for you. We need you to do the things you’re passionate about and good at. Which in most cases are the things we are not good at, but this in return helps us stay in our super power and enables the company to grow.

One of my companies is a small business and I myself still operate in it. It is my passion project. Therefore I am very conscious of who I let on my team. To me it’s like inviting someone into my family. What I want to avoid is having one rotten apple infect everyone else in a negative way. When hiring team members, one of my main objectives is to keep the company’s environment and my existing team safe. This will enable everyone to work and deliver to the highest standard.

Of course you need to be talented in what you do. If you’re not, you could potentially harm a company more than do it any good. Yet, from my experience talent alone won’t get you the job. Therefore in this article I am going to be sharing my 5 main points which you can adopt to increase your chances of being hired.

  1. Look the part

You may have applied for a position that doesn’t require you to wear a suit, but that doesn’t mean you should look like “it’s the weekend” in your interview. Yes, there are those Facebook cultures that embrace the whole casual vibe, but you simply can’t neglect human conditioning. You see, we are programmed to judge a person’s appearance within 3 seconds. We judge according to social dominance hierarchy and optically the majority of the people on the top look the part. So if you’re dressed like you’ve just rolled out of bed, well the person who’s done their best will instantly be ahead of you in the race and why would you want to take that risk?

2. Have a positive energy

Congratulations you’ve made it to the job interview. You’re very talented in your area of expertise and on paper you tick all the boxes. However so do the other 10 candidates who’ve gotten through to the interview rounds. In my opinion something that will instantly let you stand out from the rest is having a positive energy. Smile and be thankful! It’s not a given you got invited to this interview. In addition, the interviewer also took time out of his/her busy agenda to sit with you. Sound upbeat and happy. Having a positive energy will show your interviewer that you will be able to engage with fellow employees with an optimistic frame-of-mind and contribute to conversations and team meetings in a constructive manner. Having someone with this attitude on my team is a definite plus.

3. Be polite

It might sound cheesy, but in my opinion something that never goes out of fashion is politeness. It’s the number one social skill and in its essence shows respect. When you are polite in your interview your interviewer will see that you have the ability to show respect to your fellow team members as well as clients and business partners.

4. Be open

What do I mean by this? When you’re at your interview or new workplace, try to leave your preconceptions and beliefs outside. Then when you go home and you still feel uncomfortable without them you can always take them on again. When discussions take place people often act in response to what they believe. Belief is a funny thing, you can’t see it, hear it, taste it or touch it. It’s completely invisible yet every person on the planet operates from this space. Being open minded doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything the other person is saying. However, just by being open to new ideas, concepts or beliefs makes way for endless possibilities. Having a flexible mind will show that you have the ability to think and act outside the box and move with a dynamic flow of entrepreneurship. You will be a major asset to the company.

5. Be yourself

I strongly believe that being yourself is key. Why? Because when you express your core values concerning a job, you will attract a company who equally shares these values. You might say; “but Arnon, won’t I scare companies away if I express my values out loud?” Yes, you will! These companies might not hire you, but that’s a good thing because if you are forced to conform to morals and values you are not happy with, over time you will become unhappy in your job. That will make you an unhappy employee and no one will benefit from that.

Put all of these points together and you get something I’d like to call a winner’s attitude. As a business owner I can train talent or skills, but one thing I can’t train is attitude. When your attitude is right and you show this in your interview through the few points I have mentioned above you will stand out from the rest and your chances of being hired will drastically increase. Good luck out there!
